The six-week course is open to those aged 19+ employed within the sector living in Devon or Cornwall.

This Skills Bootcamp will provide you with an introduction to the practical skills in a range of trade occupations within the construction industry. These will include:

– Basic Bricklaying

– Small Scale Building Repairs

Completion of this Skills Bootcamp is designed to lead into further training and employment as a bricklayer, carpenter, plaster, painter/decorator or in property maintenance.

Skills Bootcamp in Understanding Domestic Retrofit

You will finish the course with a greater understanding of the retrofit agenda and a Level 2 Award in Domestic Retrofit.

Training on: understanding and use of thermography equipment to survey and understand building construction, external wall insulation, loft insulation, heat pumps. There will also be experience in drone surveying and thermal imaging; if successful, learners will gain a CAA drone flyers ID.

Students will gain a range of practical skills for working on heritage properties, which will introduce them to a range of trade occupations within the Heritage Construction Industry. Curriculum emphasis will be tailored to the particular needs of each cohort, but will include:

Overview of conservation basics – damp, why traditional materials, breathability – focus on practicality and function of good traditional building skills and materials rather than delve into philosophy; why good for the building etc.

Lime skills practical and theory – What is lime, how it is made and the different types available and what they are used for. lime repointing, (how to apply and finish work) mixing lime (pan mixer/whisk/drum mixer) Pozzolans & lime washing.

Cob – practical and theory – what is cob, how to carry out a repair to a cob wall using cob blocks and lime mortar. Toothing in and using helifix bars.

Stonework – practical and theory. Introduction in stonemasonry principles, different types of stonework (rubble stone, ashlar etc) mortar choice, working stone by hand, matching existing finishes. Using lime mortar to bed stonework. Indent or repair of damaged stone.

This Occupational Works Supervision Skills Bootcamp has been created for individuals who are construction trades team leaders, assistant supervisors, supervisors on SSSTS certification seeking to upskill onto a Level 3 NVQ supervision qualification and gain a Gold CSCS Supervisory card within the Devon area.

This pathway allows you more flexibility to train during evenings and weekends (The timetable for this bootcamp is Mon – Thurs evenings 17.30 – 20.30 and Saturdays (9:00 – 17:00) across 8 weeks) with the knowledge / theory part of the training being delivered remotely. This allows you to login via video conferencing software like Zoom or Microsoft Teams to a live tutor from the comfort of your own home!

What is included in this training?

• Level 1 H&S in a construction environment course prep and assessment (including re-sit)
• CITB Test
• CSCS Card x 2 prior to completion of NVQ and on completion of NVQ Level 3
• Registration onto a NOCN NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision

To qualify for the level 3 Supervision Bootcamp, learners are required to:

• Live within the Devon region and be 19+ years old
• Have experience in the construction either up to a level 2 trade qualification or with equivalent experience and with extra responsibilities such as acting as a team leader, supporting a qualified supervisor or a site manager or currently holding an SSSTS certificate and are looking to qualify for a Gold CSCS Supervisors card

This Skills Bootcamp in Industrial Painting has been developed in consultation with industry recognised organisations and is aimed at Bronze Level Industrial Painters. This course is to build on your current experience within the painting industry. You will gain increased knowledge and training around Abrasive Blasting and Spray Painting.

The attraction for this course is that you will gain the following: Silver/Gold Card (dependent upon experience), valued insight in Working Safely at Height and Emergency First Aid at Work. This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

The six-week course is open to those aged 19+ employed within the sector living in Devon.

This Progress in Rope Access Skills Bootcamp will upskill current Level 1 Rope Access Technicians to Level 2, providing them with the skills in rescues and performing rope access manoeuvres under the supervision of a qualified Level 3 Technician. Increasing their knowledge of legislation safety requirements and quality assurance procedures relating to rope access.

This course includes the following: Level 2 Rope Access, GWO Basic Training and Emergency First Aid at Work. This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

The six-week course is open to those aged 19+ employed within the construction sector living in Devon.

This Skills Bootcamp in Scaffolding has been developed in consultation with industry recognised organisations and is aimed at Part 1 Scaffolders. This course is to progress your current knowledge and skills within Scaffolding. On this course you will progress your skills in areas such as Health and Safety, wearing and using the correct PPE.

The attraction for this course is that you will gain the following: Part 2 Scaffolding and Emergency First Aid at Work. This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

The six-week course is open to those aged 19+ employed within the sector living in Devon or Cornwall.

This new Skills Bootcamp in Retrofit has been developed to upskill Construction professionals in the key skills and competencies required to Retrofit existing properties and adopt modern methods of Construction.

On 15 January 2025 Truro and Penwith College will be hosting a Taster Day for the Skills Bootcamp in Retrofit Readiness to provide an opportunity to meet with the tutors, take part in taster activities to get a better understanding of the content and study requirements of the full taught programme content, learn about the benefits of becoming an adult learner at Truro and Penwith College and meet with trained Guidance Officers to discuss career aspirations and any additional support or accessibility requirements.

The nine-week Skills Bootcamp will then start on 22 January 2025 and learners will study a range of subjects that will enable aspiring leaders and managers to develop their career in the Construction sector and prepare for progression onto further studies or an Apprenticeship.

This Skills Bootcamp in Global Wind is Global Wind Organisation approved and will support learners who want to progress in their trade and working in the wind turbine industry. This course incorporates the following elements: GWO Basic Safety Training and Emergency First Aid at Work.

This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

This course is aimed at any construction worker who would like to transition from onshore / offshore to working in Global Wind.

This Skills Bootcamp in Industrial Painting has been developed in consultation with industry recognised organisations. This course is a starting point for those wanting to become an Industrial Painter. On this course you will learn all the essential knowledge required before starting work on site.

The attraction for this course is that you will gain the following: Bronze TTP Card, valuable insight at Working Safely at Height and Emergency First Aid at Work. This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

This course is aimed at people who would like to become a Trainee Industrial Painter (Train the Painter Bronze).

The Skills Bootcamp in Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training course (BOSIET) will give the learner the necessary skills to handle a variety of emergency scenarios working offshore. This course incorporates the following elements: BOSIET and Emergency First Aid at Work.

This course is aimed at any construction worker who would like to transition from onshore to offshore.

This Skills Bootcamp in Scaffolding has been developed in consultation with industry recognised organisations. This course is a starting point for those wanting to become a qualified Scaffolder. On this course you will learn key aspects of a Scaffolder’s day-to-day duties such as Health and Safety, wearing and using the correct PPE.

The attraction for this course is that you will gain the following: COTS, CCSNG, Part 1 Scaffolding, Working Safely at Height and Emergency First Aid at Work. This course will be assessed by completing workbooks, practical assessments and multiple choice questions.

This course is aimed at current Trainee Scaffolders or people who would like to become a Trainee Scaffolder.

2. Supporting Children’s Play: Participants will learn about the role and characteristics of a playworker, intervention styles, risky play, and the voice of the child. This module emphasizes the importance of supporting and facilitating children’s play experiences.

Fast track to a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship!

Over the course of 8 weeks you will take part in fun learning sessions designed to provide you with an introduction to childcare and help you to understand more about how children learn and develop. You will spend one day a week on a placement with a local Nursery where you get the opportunity to test your practical skills and begin to form relationships with what will hopefully become the setting for your Level 3 Early Years Educator Accelerated Apprenticeship. You will also complete Pediatric First Aid certification, crucial for working within childcare.

• Introduction to childcare,
• Safeguarding and Health & Safety legislations and guidance,
• Supporting Equality Diversity and Inclusion,
• An introduction to theorists and philosophical approaches to how children learn and develop, and their influence on practice,

This Ecology and Conservation Skills Bootcamp will provide introductory knowledge and understanding of ecology and ecosystems focusing on the broad range of environmental settings in North Devon. The nature of ecosystems and the populations within them will be reviewed in theory and in practice with learners engaging in field work to gather appropriate data.

Learning Outcomes:
-Demonstrate a broad understanding of ecosystems and their dynamic nature, exploring the mechanisms and ecological implications of evolution.

You will also look at all care standards from a theoretical viewpoint and look at the underpinning values in the sector, and develop your communication skills.

Much of your learning will be through focused discussions with a self-assessment of your understanding of the knowledge you have gained, with suggestions for further reading and extension activities.

The course will cover the following topics:

• Emergency First Aid at Work: Learn to assess emergency situations and respond effectively. This element will be certificated by Highfield.
• Care certificate knowledge: Gain knowledge of the 15 standards on the care certificate. You will complete a workbook to demonstrate your understanding and present it to potential employers.
• Skills/Baseline observations: Engage in practical activities where you will learn vital skills such as accurately recording blood pressure, temperature, and assessing patients. This session takes place in our hospital simulation suite.
• Safe manual handling: Obtain a certificate in safe manual handling to prevent injuries when moving heavy loads. This element is certificated by Highfield.
• Introduction to understanding safeguarding: Acquire essential knowledge on safeguarding patients and identifying signs and symptoms. Understand how to safeguard yourself in the process.
• Understanding specific needs in health and social care: Explore various conditions that impact service users. Utilise simulation equipment to experience these conditions and learn how to provide effective support.
• Preparation for interview/interview skills: Prepare for job interviews by gaining insights into common interview questions and understanding what employers seek in responses.
• Tutorial/academic study skills: Receive valuable support on various topics, including letter writing, job applications, and computer skills. The session will be tailored to your individual needs.

Careers research will be targeted towards your current experience and career goals.

Students who complete the course are guaranteed a job interview in the sector.

You will be required to attend each Friday for 11 weeks from Friday 10 January 2025.

This Social Care Skills Bootcamp aims to give an adult introduction to the social care sector overall. We will look at this area and the different settings where social care is provided.

Course is focused on careers in social care – aim is to give employability and basic study skills with an up-to-date view of the social care sector.
Students guaranteed a job interview in sector, so they will have relevant knowledge and some transferable skills e.g. first aid and recording of observations
We will cover all care standards from theoretical viewpoint ( as they are not employed and will need to complete this on gaining employment they cannot do the actual qualification).

Focus on underpinning values in the sector. As these are adult learners, much of the learning will be focussed discussions with self-assessment of understanding of the knowledge, with suggestions for further reading and extension activities for more academic learners. The lecturer will assess and adapt delivery to the group each week. Discussions will support development of key skill of communication in the sector. Self-assessment will support reflection – another core skill for those working in Social work.

Careers research will be targeted towards individual learners to support their current experience and career goals as they will vary.

Resources will be primarily online via the Google Classroom to support sustainability and reduce use of paper resources.

The sequence of the sessions is designed to give an introduction to essential information in Health care that has a general knowledge aspect but then moving on to more sector specific issues and topics. The practical sessions of first aid and manual handling are threaded through the course to add variety and application to the theory.

Get to grips with what it’s like to work as an accountant with this brand new Skills Bootcamp in Bookkeeping, backed and funded by the UK Government. With changes to working practices, the role of a bookkeeper/accountant has become much broader, with analytical skills, commercial awareness, and business partnering all representing key responsibilities within an organisation. The Accountancy Skills Bootcamp is the perfect introduction for those wanting to understand their business’ finances better, those switching careers or getting started in the professional world, as the programme helps you to understand the fundamental principles and working practises of accountancy.

A free in-person accounting course, the Bootcamp will give learners the ability to confidently understand the documents, terminology, and technical skills required by an accountant, with an end goal of increasing eligibility for career progression and/or educational opportunities – whether onto an Apprenticeship, into full time employment, or into a new role.

The Accountancy Skills Bootcamp will enable you to learn the fundamental skills you will need to work in a finance related role, so you understand basic bookkeeping, fundamental accounting techniques, financial statements, and costing techniques. The delivery of the course will be through a 1 day a week for 10 weeks.

Skills Bootcamp in Advanced Driver Assistance

Who is this qualification for?

This award is designed for Learners who maintain, and repair vehicles fitted with ADAS technology. It contains the skills and knowledge required to carry out calibration of ADAS sensors. This includes systems for driver safety, pedestrian safety, motion/stability control and collision avoidance systems. On completing this qualification, technicians will have gained knowledge working safely, understanding a variety of technologies, and understanding the tools and equipment and environmental conditions when calibrating ADAS systems.

It is therefore designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements relating to vehicles fitted with ADAS technology.

This Award-sized qualification offers an introduction to this specialised industry sector which, in addition to complimenting their current industry qualifications and experience, will enable Learners to continue to work safely within their role. These roles can include, but are not exclusive, to:

• maintenance and repair technician
• Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET) technicians

This Skills Bootcamp in Aviation is a 60-hour guided learning course and is funded in full by Devon County Council, working in partnership with Exeter Aerospace.

This course focuses on transferring existing automotive skills in vehicle paint and maintenance, covering the regulations, skills and behaviours required to work in a certified Part 145 organisation. You will be taught by licenced engineers who will share their experience of working in the aviation sector and visit the hangars at Exeter Aerospace, reinforcing and developing the topics covered.

This two-week course will cover:

• The difference in environment between the automotive and aviation workshop
• Process difference such as the regulations for signing off on jobs and procedures
• Who are the CAA and EASA, what is a Part 145 and 147 organisation
• Procedure and Process (MTOE)
• Completion of Human Factors module
• Who does what, the difference in roles – Tech, A Licence, B licence engineers
• Workshop familiarisation
• Meet automotive technicians who have made the leap into the aviation sector

Practical training will be provided for each part to develop the specific skills required to complete tasks and improve to a professional standard.

On successful completion of the Skills Bootcamp candidates will be interviewed by Exeter Aerospace to potentially take up current places available.

This Intro to Renewables Skills Bootcamp provides an introduction to the engineering, technological, environmental, socioeconomic and legal issues relevant to the development and exploitation of renewable energies. This course looks at the rapid development of renewables, such as offshore renewables, green hydrogen and solar energies across the UK and globally.

Learning Outcomes:

● To develop an understanding and awareness of the political framework, policy, planning, technological and scientific issues surrounding the Renewable Energy sector.
● To identify and evaluate national strategies for the development of renewable energy technologies.
● To analyse the scale and opportunity of renewable energies in the UK, such as the new offshore wind farms in the Celtic Sea.
● Work effectively as part of a group.

The Skills Bootcamp will provide learners with the initial skills they may require in starting a career in the manufacturing sector.

The first session will be based at Eaton aerospace in South Molton and will give learners the opportunity to have a tour around the manufacturing facility there and discuss the sector. The learners will be given an opportunity to ask any questions.

Reading Engineering drawings – The learners will be taught how to understand first and third angle projection, how to interpret engineering drawings and the tolerancing systems associated with them.

Using Measuring equipment – The learners will be able to effectively read and use external micrometer, bore micrometer, depth micrometer, vernier height gauges, use gauges to good effect and digital callipers.

Using tools and equipment to produce and assemble a product by hand – this will be the key part of the tuition and will be split into manufacturing individual items using hand fitting techniques, to then assembling items that have been manufactured.

Soldering – The learners will gain a basic understanding of the theory and practical skill associated with soldering.
