Improving Lives Plymouth are upskilling their staff with Leadership and Management Skills Bootcamps
Health and wellbeing charity, Improving Lives Plymouth (ILP) are taking advantage of the funded Leadership and Management training to upskill their staff into fantastic leaders.
The charity was looking to improve leadership and management skills across their line management and after speaking with their local college, City College Plymouth, about what was available, they decided that Skills Bootcamps were the best fit! Skills Bootcamps are short courses, running from 2 to 16 weeks, and with up to 90% funding from Devon County Council, they are the perfect way to invest in your organisation’s development.
Sarah, Executive Assistant at ILP, said “From the outset, the Skills Bootcamp captured our interest. Their flexible structure and meaningful content stood out as a perfect fit for our goals: empowering our managers with the skills and confidence to lead effectively, developing a stronger organisation, and ultimately enhancing the services we provide to the community.”
ILP provide a wide range of services, including advice and support for vulnerable members of our community and various activities and social groups to build community connection and wellbeing.
The flexibility of Skills Bootcamps allowed them to co-design a bespoke training programme tailored to their specific needs – one that was affordable, relevant, and compatible with managers’ demanding schedules. This Skills Bootcamp is accredited by CMI, and allows businesses to choose the most relevant Level 3 Award for their specific needs, making this a real customised course.
This Skills Bootcamp is held one day per week on site at City College Plymouth for 10 weeks. The learners felt that this was a great way to properly immerse themselves in the training, away from day to day distractions.

Skills Bootcamp learner, Heidi, said, “The course has given me practical models and ideas that I have been able to use with the team straight away. I also learnt some new things about myself!”
In just a few weeks, the benefits of the training became apparent. The learners felt valued by the investment in their development, and the programme content directly aligned with their responsibilities, testament to how the bespoke programme works so well. The learners have shown that the practical skills are already being put into action, from exploring new approaches to staff supervision to understanding and adapting to different communication styles.
Learner, Danny said:
“It has elevated my motivation at work and has allowed me to think creatively. I enjoyed learning about the models and putting theory into practice. I feel much closer to my colleagues.”
Bringing together managers from across the organisation allows them to network and build relationships which has strengthened the way they work across the organisation. It’s clear to see that they have built friendships that will last long past the training, building a network of support which will allow them to further succeed.
The positive impact has been substantial, with managers reporting increased confidence and a renewed sense of purpose. Encouraged by this success, ILP are sending more of their line managers onto the Skills Bootcamp to continue development throughout the organisation.
