Meet Louise who completed the Working in Healthcare Skills Bootcamp
Age 43
Area Exeter
Louise has wanted to work within the healthcare sector since she was young, she said,
“Healthcare and nursing has always been something I wanted to get into but with having children, I just never got round to it. Once my youngest was old enough, I thought it was time for a career change and I came across the Skills Bootcamp and thought I would give that a go and see where that gets me.”
She currently owns her own cleaning business but has been looking to change career and get back to her dream. When she came across Exeter College’s Healthcare Support Skills Bootcamp online she found that it was a great opportunity to take that step.
The Skills Bootcamp was held once a week onsite at Exeter College. Their sessions were all classroom based and included some practical sessions looking at things such as basic first aid and resuscitation. Alongside the teaching, the NHS came in to deliver talks to the learners, this included speakers from the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and Mental Health services. They gave an overview of live vacancies, providing an insight into the application process to give learners to best chance.
Since completing the Skills Bootcamp, Louise has had a successful interview with Royal Devon University Healthcare and is looking forward to getting started. She said that the content taught as part of the Skills Bootcamp and the tutor’s guidance was invaluable at helping her feel confident and prepared for the interview.

“What the course gave you was an insight into all the information you needed to go into the interview, looking at their values and duty of care.”
Although Louise wasn’t initially sure what to expect from the Skills Bootcamp, she quickly found that it was enjoyable and that the tutors were excellent.
“The tutor made it, as a nurse for 25 years he had every knowledge that you could possibly think of. It was really invaluable for everybody in that group to have a tutor like him.”
Louise said:
“If it’s something that you always thought that you’d like to do and you’ve got a keen interest in, or maybe you want a bit of a career change I’d say definitely go for it!”
